What to Expect during a Feng Shui Consultation

This article discusses the various areas involved in an authentic Classical Feng Shui Consultation, (incorporating the Luo Pan Compass, Surrounding Landform, 8 Mansions and Xuan Kong/Flying Star Feng Shui). The practice of Xuan Kong Fei Xing Feng Shui originated over 1500 years ago, and involves mathematical computations and probability factors determined via the precise compass orientation, surrounding landform and construction date of the building.

Some Consultants utilize a more simplified Feng Shui approach incorporating a fixed Bagwa Map that is aligned to the main door of your home, or by locating the 8 main compass sectors of your home and assigning 8 life aspiration titles to each sector (eg Southeast = wealth, SW = Relationships and so on. These new age methods of feng shui were invented in the early 1970’s - 1980’s and appeal to your Mankind Luck via the ‘intention’ of the Consultant and a symbolic approach to the personal aspirations of the client.

Its advisable to ask a prospective Feng Shui Consultant which method they employ and decide for yourself which approach will best suit your requirements. If they do not use a Luo Pan Compass or know how to ‘fly the stars’ or request the construction and renovation dates of your home, plus a copy of the floor plan and dates of birth of all the residents, then they are probably adopting the simplified new age approach.

There is also some conjecture as to whether there is a difference between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Once again, the majority of Feng Shui Masters around the world agree that as long as you are using a compass, (thus measuring the magnetic energy associated with a particular location) and as long as the sun continues to rise in the east and set in the west, then there is no difference between the Hemispheres. I have personally experimented with the Hemisphere debate, and have always found the more advanced flying star formulae to be accurate when applied the traditional way. Otherwise, people living on the equator would be most confused indeed!

Feng Shui Consultations can be conducted as On-Site (where the Consultant personally visits your home, office or potential building site) and Off-Site (where you are sent a detailed questionnaire of internal and external observations to fill in and are asked to provide a floor plan, site plan, compass measurement of the sitting/facing direction of the building, and a list of photos to be mailed to the Consultant for analysis).

Both On-Site and Off-Site Feng Shui Consultations utilize your floor plan, site plan, birth details (including time and place of birth), dates when the building was built and last renovated and the precise compass orientation of the building. The Consultant will work within your preferred criteria (ie utilizing pre-existing objects and furnishings within the home, whether or not you are flexible with alternative bedroom and office placement, whether you are building, own the home or are renting, and so on).

Before booking a Feng Shui Consultation, its wise to think carefully about which areas you would most like the Consultant to target in your Report (ie health, abundance potential, relationship harmony, lack of energy, disharmony, new career direction, etc). Sometimes they will find an area within the natal flying star chart of the home or office, which can be enhanced for either health or abundance potential, and they will need to know your preferred areas of importance. The various mathematical formulae used to determine the correct element balance and probability of positive or negative chi in each area can sometimes override each other and be utilized in different ways depending on your personal criteria.

Before an On-Site Consultation, the Consultant will most likely ask for your time, date and place of birth (as well as the birth details for anyone else living in your home). This information will help them in their initial assessment when they arrive, as they will know whether you are an East or West group person, your 4 auspicious directions, Kua number, earthly branch, personal element mix and so on.

During an On-Site visit, a Feng Shui Consultant will ask you for a floor plan and they will need to know the date of construction of the dwelling and if/when any major renovations have occurred and what they entailed. They will then examine the surrounding landform and road configurations around your dwelling; take compass readings, note the location of the bins, electricity meter box, water tanks, barbeque and any water features such as a pond, pool, fountain, river etc.

They will provide advice on the placement of outdoor water features, structures such as slanted ceilings, position of the kitchen, overhead beams, bedroom and office location, and indicate if there are any obvious element/directional clashes in relation to your furniture orientation when sitting, working or sleeping and the Xuan Kong probability factors contained within each compass sector.

Some Consultants also provide additional services, which, although not part of the Feng Shui audit itself, are complementary to the Feng Shui process. These additional services may include personal astrological horoscopes, space clearing, dousing, measuring geopathic stress, chakra balancing, landscape design and various visualization techniques. These additional services would most likely include additional costs, so its best to check the price structure before you agree to include added services during the Consultants visit.

After the Consultation, you will usually receive either a taped version of the Consultation (recorded as the Consultant walked around your premises during the Consultation) or a typed Feng Shui report detailing the Feng Shui aspects of each room, listing recommended element cures and enhancements for balancing the elements and working with the flying star combinations of the natal chart. The personal 8 Mansions details for each individual living in the dwelling should also be listed, with recommended bed, office and seating arrangements to benefit each individual. Your current and future abundance points, health & family harmony sectors and any sectors containing negative health, quarrel or possible litigation chi should also be listed, with appropriate element remedies, enhancements, placement of water features, mountain star enhancement and element theory to balance and harmonise these important areas.

Because time and luck are cyclic, it is wise to request a yearly flying star update for your home, listing any sectors negatively affected during the current year, with suitable remedies to balance the elements. The main yearly afflictions to be aware of are: the 5 Yellow (Wu Wang), the 2 Monarch of Sickness Star, the 3 Killings (Si Sam/Sam Sart) and the Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui).

When booking your Consultation, you should ask the Consultant what services they provide (as well as their cost structure) and how their report will be presented to you. It also helps to have the Consultants contact phone number and email address for any queries you may have concerning their recommendations in your report.

Before you book a Feng Shui Consultation, you should understand the basics concerning the Trinity of Luck. If you are not familiar with this concept, please read our Article titled “The Trinity of Luck” in the Articles section of our website.

Feng Shui is not a religion, and it will not produce instant miracles or immediately solve deep-seated emotional problems or negate any bad judgments you have previously made.

When your home is correctly enhanced with the appropriate landform, element and yin/yang balance, the flying stars are correctly analyzed and remedied according to the element cycles, and your personal sleep, eating and working orientations within the home have been correctly set in place and regularly utilized, you will be inclined to think more clearly, more positive opportunities will tend to come your way and you will generally feel nurtured and revitalized while spending time in your home. This is what Feng Shui is all about. Living in harmony with your surroundings.
