The Chinese New Year has a great history. It is very similar to the Western one, swathed in traditions and rituals. The origin of the Chinese New Year is itself centuries old – infact, too old to actually be traced.Preparations tend to begin a month from the date of the Chinese New Year, when people start buying presents, decoration materials, food and clothing. A huge clean up gets underway days before the New Year, when houses are cleaned from top to bottom, to sweep away any traces of bad luck, and doors and window-panes are given a new coat of paint, usually red. The doors and windows are then decorated with paper cuts and couplets with themes such as happiness, wealth and longevity printed on them.

The eve of the New Year is perhaps the most exciting part of the event. Here, traditions and rituals are very careful observed in everything from food to clothing. Dinner is usually a feast of seafood and dumplings, signifying different good wishes. Delicacies include prawns, for liveliness and happiness, dried oysters, for all things good, raw fish salad to bring good luck and prosperity, Angel Hair, an edible hair-liked seaweed to bring prosperity, and dumplings boiled in water signifying a long-lost good wish for a family. It’s usual to wear something red as the colour is meant to ward off evil spirits, but black and white are out, as these are associated with mourning. After dinner, the family stay up for the night playing cards, board games or watching TV programs dedicated to the occasion. At midnight, the sky is lit up by fireworks.

On the day itself, Dragon and Lion dances are performed and an ancient custom called Hong Bao, meaning Red Envelope takes place. This involves married couples giving children and unmarried adults money in red envelopes. Then the family begins to say greetings from door to door, first to the relatives and then their neighbours.

In feng shui and for oriental traditions, the fish is a very symbolic creature which represents abundance and wealth. Having fishes in the kitchen is a great way of helping abundance and provisions to be always present in the house. Feng shui practitioners recommend having fishes and double fishes in the kitchen or the living room in order to make sure that those who inhabit the house will always have what they need.

Yu, which means fish, phonetically matches the word for abundance, which might be a coincidence but is very symbolic as well. It is very common to see objects representing fishes in many Chinese houses, most of the times in the kitchen but sometimes in the living rooms as well.

Fishes are abundant in the sea and provide us an unlimited source of nourishment and supplies. It is a natural source of human sustenance which can be found in abundant amounts. Therefore, they are an abundant creature itself and its symbolism might be highly due to this aspect of their nature.

Besides all what was mentioned above, a fish is also seen as a symbol of fertility. Fishes have notable abilities for reproduction which makes them an ideal icon for symbolizing fertility. They are always together and travel as a team which makes them also symbolize unity and marriage.

A fish is also a symbol of life renewal. This creature survives all times and époques and is always there for other beings to nurture from them. They are constantly renewing and giving birth to next generations, and this is seen by the oriental cultures as a great symbol of life preservation and regeneration. They show strength and are seen as representing a power for restoration and revival as well as rejuvenation and the power of continuation through time.

Double fishes represent unity, marriage and abundance not only in food provisions but also in children and family in general. Having double fishes in the living room or the room in which the family gathers to eat is a great way of assuring abundance in all aspects and for all the family members.

Dowsing is a feng shui technique used in order to complement the harmonization of the relationship between an environment and those who inhabit in it. Although dowsing is not part of traditional feng shui, it is often recognized by feng shui practitioners as an addition to the search for balance within spaces.

The procedure of dowsing consists on detecting energy flows within spaces by using specific methods which are additional to the ones used by traditional feng shui. Feng shui follows indications given by Compasses measures as well as suggestions given by bagua map and personal numbers.

The techniques used by practitioners who apply dowsing are based on his body and mind as well as on specific tools. It takes them an important amount of knowledge and expertise to be able to apply the techniques needed for dowsing and achieve satisfactory results. Feng shui and dowsing mix by following some specific steps and applying certain techniques. First of all, together they can easily recognize and spot bad flows of energy within any environment. These energy flows can be exteriorized by the appearance of geological faults or underground water.

Also, disturbances created by power lines or cell phone towers can be recognized and treated by the combination of feng shui and dowsing methodologies and techniques. Besides, these methodologies also allow spotting any metaphysical disturbances which might be causing problems to the building and its inhabitants.

Dowsers count with the proper tools and techniques to fix the energy problems which the above mentioned disturbances might be causing to the environment in which they were found. This way, they can clear bad energy and make sure all the energy left in a building is positive and won’t cause any problems to the people who live in it.

Once the energy of the building is cleaned, the energy of those who inhabit it must be cleaned too since they might have absorbed some of it. In order to achieve this, dowsers will clean each one of the twelve energy layers which each one of us has according to these methodologies. Through the application of this personal energy clearing, we would become free of any bad energy which could be causing any problems or obstacles to our lives.

The golden ratio is a very important concept in feng shui due to the way it implies aspects of balance and perfection of shapes. Feng shui is based on the search for harmony between the human beings and the environment in which they are. Feng shui is always looking for balancing the elements and objects which surround living beings and compose their environments.

The environments in which the human being lives often tend to become unbalanced and lose its natural harmony due to the way in which he modifies it and adds artificial elements to it. Feng shui provides the guidelines and knowledge necessary to re-establish the natural balance which human beings as well as all living beings need to surround them and the golden ratio is a constant always present in this natural balance.

The environment in which the human being lives is made of natural elements and shapes. The golden ratio is a rule that can be often found in many elements of the nature as well as in artificial objects made by man. This way, it can help achieving the desired harmony by being used along with feng shui balancing elements and objects.

The golden ratio is a numeric value which was discovered by Euclid and shows a mathematical relationship which appears as a constant. The golden ratio is often known as the phi number is necessary in order to calculate many different mathematical shapes and geometrical related elements.

Architects who have a formation on feng shui and follow its guidelines at the time of designing their buildings, often use the golden ratio as an important tool in order to achieve such goal. It can be used in architectural elements such as columns, pillars, overtures and windows as well as in the general design of the building.

Besides its architectural applications, the golden ratio is also employed by feng shui experts through the use of objects such as vases, flower pots, fountains, coins, candles, wind chimes, and many other symbolic ornaments which would balance to an environment. Often, we would not even realize the ways in which this mathematical element is present around us and in the nature by appearing through natural formations, flowers, plants, and even living beings.

The practice of feng shui is believed to have started six thousand years ago in the Neolithic times. This way, and according to some discoveries which back up this affirmation, feng shui can be placed among the most ancient practices of not only China but the entire world as well. Since those times, it has been carried from one generation to another as well as it has been acquiring new knowledge while deepening the already existing one.

Feng shui can be said to date from the Neolithic times due to the fact that a gravesite from that date was found containing clear feng shui elements. This gravesite was discovered facing north and it had a picture of a dragon on its east side and a picture of a tiger on the west, all of them feng shui symbolic elements which were in accordance to a clear study of the environment in which it was and the land forms of the surroundings.

This gravesite which was discovered in the Chinese province of Henan, dating from the Neolithic times, also contained representations of creatures and symbols which indicate the application of feng shui notions. Among these representations, it had the Big Dipper in its centre and the Four Celestial Palaces around it.

The Four Celestial Palaces, as they were found in this Neolithic gravesite, are four macro constellations containing seven constellations each and which together are the twenty eight constellations of the Chinese zodiac. These Four Celestial Palaces are similarly used and followed today as they were discovered in this Neolithic gravesite, and are another reason which allows experts to affirm that this gravesite had a clear application of feng shui notions similar to those we handle these days.

The four macro constellations which were found in the Chinese Neolithic gravesite are the red bird which belongs to the south, the blue dragon of east, the white tiger of west, and the black turtle of north. It is said that these four Celestial Palaces came to the earth representing land forms and all those elements which feng shui handles in order to harmonize an environment.

Time comes and goes without a trace; soon we are going to celebrate the Chinese New Year on February 18, 2007. We will say Kung Hay Fat Choy to everyone we meet wishing them the best in the coming year.

I have made my annual predictions public since 2004. It has become part of my yearly research and advice to my students from all over the world. People have emailed me and told me they are eagerly awaiting the release of my predictions each year.

The year of the Dog will be replaced by the year of the Pig based on the 12 Chinese Zodiac sign sequence. The Chinese custom will celebrate New Year on the first day of the year based on the lunar calendar; however Feng Shui and Bazi will start the New Year on February 4, 2007 based on the solar calendar.

Every year, it’s very nerve-racking for me to write up the prediction; sometimes I just hope my more ominous predictions aren’t right! I sincerely hope everyone will have a prosperous year with no major setbacks and surprises with my prediction.

Year 2007 is the year of the Pig, Ding Hai year, the yearly hexagram is Jin gua, the annual flying star in the central palace is #2, the annual Shen Shas which can cause trouble are San Sha in the West, Li Shi in the Northeast.

Jin gua is the 35th hexagram in Yi Jing, Li trigram on top of Kun trigram, the bright Sun is shining upon the Earth. Jin Gua is a hexagram which means advancing forward and moving upward.

This year, it will be important for those government officials to show their patriotic duties to stabilise the uncertainty, to manage the state affairs for the benefit of the people. They will be rewarded for their righteous effort. It will be important to understand if you take your responsibility seriously, you will be rewarded, recognised and promoted in your career.

The teaching of Jin gua is the moral principle we must adhere to when we are taking measures to advance and to achieve our personal goals. We must act like the Sun, shining and warming those under us and work for the benefit of everyone. When we make the advance, our motive must be righteous without any personal selfishness. If we follow the moral principle we will feel peace at heart even in difficult times. Don’t worry about winning or losing, you will succeed as long as you can adhere to the moral principle.

Before we think of advancement, we must gain the trust and support of the general public; don’t rely on luck, don’t let your insatiable greediness overtake your conscience, you must have a detailed plan, you must proceed with care.

The outlook for the year based on the yearly Jin hexagram and its yao changes according to Huang Zhi Qing Shi.

January and February – difficulties, a breakthrough and solution is needed.

March and April – lack of results, unfinished business.

May and June – travelling, visitors, changes, uncertainty and instabilities.

July and August – peeling off, erosion from within with danger of collapsing.

September and October – blockage, the honest good guys are losing and the bad guys are laughing.

November and December – happiness, jubilation and preparation for events to come.

Wars, terrorism, unrest and demonstrations have occupied and affected our daily life since the turn of the century. Active conflicts continue around the world, including civic wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chechnya, Somalia, Senegal, Colombia and Sudan and continued turmoil from 9/11, the Afghanistan and Iraq Invasions, the Arab and Israeli conflicts and the nuclear crisis in Iran and North Korea.

There are a lot of similarities between 1939 – 1945 and 2001 – 2007. September 1939 was the beginning of World War II in Europe. September 2001, was 9/11 and the beginning of the War on Terrorism. The yearly hexagrams are:

1939/2001 Jian gua (Xun/Gen)

1940/2002 Jian gua (Kan/Gen)

1941/2003 Gen gua (Gen/Gen)

1942/2004 Qian gua (Kun/Gen)

1943/2005 Pi gua (Qian/Kun)

1944/2006 Cui gua (Dui/Kun)

1945/2007 Jin gua (Li/Kun)

In August 1945, the US detonated an atomic bomb over the city of Nagasaki, Japan. September 1945, the World War II ended.

It is worrisome that we might see a nuclear bomb detonated on a city to end the lingering wars we have today. With the annual 5 and Li Shi both in the Northeast, it’s troubling to note that North Korea is situated in Northeast Asia and Iran and Afghanistan are situated in Northeast Africa/Middle East. I hope the wars and conflicts will end with a peaceful solution, not a nuclear bomb.

From the Bazi point of view, Ding Hai year is fire over water, it’s a Wei Ji gua which indicates incompletion.

Hai is Zheng Kuan to Ding, Ding is Zheng Tsai to Hai, with the hidden combination of Ding and Hai (Ren), there can be corruption between government officials and businesses.

Hai is one of the 4 horses associated with movement and travelling, be careful with driving. Travel agents may be busy especially with cruise ships.

For those born in Wei year (Ram), Mao year (Rabbit), Yin year (Tiger) and Si year (Snake), there is a possibility of residence change.

For those born in Wei hour (1-3 pm), Mao hour (5-7 am), Hai hour (9-11 pm) or Yin hour (3-5 am), you may see good results in your examination or career.

From the Zi Wei Dou Shu point of view, the annual Wealth palace will be in Wei and the Career palace will be in Yin so you can place your picture and a piggy bank in these two sectors of your house to activate the wealth and career.

With San Sha in the West this year, we need to pay attention to the respiratory, immune system and kidney illnesses, especially young women and girls.

Extreme care should be used if you try to disturb the West, it can bring about tragedies as serious as death and bankruptcy. Be careful if the house door or bedroom is located in the West, or if there is any disturbance, or outside sharp object or sha qi coming from the West.

To minimize the “San Sha” effect, you can place a real plant or tree in the Western sector inside or outside the house, you can also put a little bucket of water and 3 metal Kiluns (facing West) together with the tree. (There is a high level Feng Shui technique “Fighting the San Sha” to bring in money, contact me if you need such a service to turn a difficult situation around).

2007 will feature another seldom talked about shen sha in Feng Shui. This year the “Li Shi” will be colliding with the annual star 5 yellow in the Northeast.

Extreme care should be exercised if you decide to disturb the Northeast; it can bring death to the male owner or young male of the house. Equipment placed in the Northeast sector may run into problems easily. Be careful if the house door or bedroom is located in the Northeast, or if there is any disturbance, outside sharp object or sha qi coming from the Northeast.

Tai Sui will be in Hai Northwest, simply placing a pair of Kilun facing Northwest may help to guard against the bad energy from that direction.

This year’s annual Flying Star chart will have number 2 in the centre, 3 in the Northwest, 4 in the West, 5 in the Northeast, 6 in the South, 7 in the North, 8 in the Southwest, 9 in the East and 1 in the Southeast.

Every home can be a safer home if we know how to deal with the yearly stars and shen sha and avoid doing the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is better to be prepared than sorry later.

To minimize the annual 5 yellow in the Northeast, the “salt water and coins” cure can be used.

To minimize the annual 2 black to avoid sickness, simply place a metal calabash in the centre of the house.

To minimize the annual 3 jade-green to avoid arguments and being emotional, put something red in the Northwest.

To minimize the annual 7 red to avoid lawsuits, put something blue in the North.

The Southwest will be the best sector in 2007 with the annual 8 white, simply put a citron crystal there for a better year financially.

Put 4 stalks of Chinese lucky bamboo or a plant in the Southeast to enhance the possibility of career advancement, improved academic studies or heightened romance.

Put a glass of water in the West for the possibility of career advancement, improved academic studies or heightened romance.

Putting a plant in the East can bring about events for celebration.

Wishing everyone a prosperous, successful and safe 2007.

Dragon

The Dragon is the animal guardian spirit of the east and can be symbolic of helpful people. Because the east represents wood, we use dragons made of metal which strengthens water, which in turn nourishes the wood. It is said that “without water the dragon is only a dead fish.”

The Dragon should be placed on the left hand side of the inside of the house when standing inside the house looking out at the facing. It should be placed at an angle facing slightly inward to symbolize the protection of the dragon energy of the east, embracing you. It is also helpful to make a small tai chi at your desk, by placing a dragon on the left at an embracing angle, and the Ki Lun on the right. At the doorway of your home or at your desk, the dragon should be placed at a higher level than the Ki Lun.

Ki Lun

Ki Lun is a pair of gentle creatures that can be used in place of the wilder more threatening Tiger. The idea is to face the paws out to grab the money and pull it inside. The Ki Lun can be used to counteract the negative effects of the 5 Yellow star, the yearly San Sha, and Tai Sui. Inside your house, place them at the right hand side of the front, facing slightly inward to symbolize the protection of the (Tiger) energy of the west, embracing you. At your desk make a small tai chi by placing a pair of Ki Lun at the right hand side on an angle facing slightly inward to symbolize the protection of the Tiger energy of the west, embracing you, and placing a Dragon on the left hand side.

Dragon Headed Tortoise

If there is no actual physical structure behind your home to give it support from the back, place this symbolic animal at the back wall of your home, preferably the sitting direction, with his head pointing towards you, not outside. If you are sitting at your desk and are unable to have a wall behind you when seated, you can place this animal on a ledge or shelf or on the floor behind you. It can give you “backing” and protect you from back stabbing and office politics.

Legged Toad

This remedy should be looking inside the house, never out towards a door or a window. Metal is always used to cancel the harmful energies of the 5 Yellow Star. The metal 3 legged toad also thrives on eating “poison” so it can be used to correct inauspicious areas where the 5 Yellow star combines with either the 9 Purple star, the 7 Red star, or where they combine altogether.

Green Elephant

This remedy is for opening the lines of communication. We place the elephant on its side, because the elephant has the exceptional ability to hear for many miles but only when his ear is to the ground. Lay an elephant on its side on a table in your living room, or by your telephone or computer keyboard for better communication.

The color Green relates to the liver which when out of balance can cause us to feel anger. Green is also the color of calming and soothing green pastures. This remedy can be used in a room with the 2 Black star or with the 2 Black and 3 Green flying star combination.

Abacus

This unique Feng Shui cure is used to protect you from outside sha that is facing you, or anything that you do not want to see, such as sharp corners coming at you. Instead of mirroring back any bad energies to someone else, the Abacus can be used to create a symbolic forest in front of you for protection.

The Abacus is divided into two sections. The beads on the top have a value of 5. The beads on the bottom have a value of 1. We must arrange and affix the beads in the middle, to create alternating values of 3 and 8 all the way across the abacus. When the numbers 3 and 8 come together they combine to represent wood, or a “forest.”

Calabash

Also called Wu Luo, this special metal gourd is used to protect our health. It should be open on the top in order to attract and trap any negative energies in locations where the 2 Black flying star has arrived. A calabash can also be placed in each bedroom of your home on a bedside table.

Pagoda

This Feng Shui remedy enhances our ability to study. It can be placed on the student’s desk, or in a room that contains the combination of the 1 White and 4 Green flying stars, or in the Southeast direction of the house.

Emperor Coin Set

This ancient coin set prevents the qi from running from a staircase straight out the door. Place these coins beneath the carpet at the threshold of the steps, or under the doormat at the entrance of your house. You can also carry these special coins in your wallet or your pocket for personal protection.

In Feng Shui, “Mountain” is eminence, noble and prestige, while “Water” is wealth. In a location where:

“Water” is shallow, people will be poor

“Water” is deep, people will be wealthy

“Water” is assembled and collected, the population will increase

“Water” is dispersed, the population will decrease

When comparing the presence of “Mountain” and “Water” in any location we will find that a “political capital” will have more mountainous presence than water. On the other hand, a “financial capital” will have less mountainous presence than water. With only mountain but no water, the people will be cruel, truculent, ferocious, poor and lacking. With only water but no mountain, the people will be arrogant with haughty manner, indulge in luxurious, debauchery/erotic lifestyle. We need the balance of “Mountain” and “Water” in Feng Shui.

Mountain should not be rocky, rugged and unpleasant. Water should be deep, broad, clean, clear, slow flowing, roaming, weaving, gathering, curvy and incoming to be considered for wealth, abundance, prosperity and good fortune in the practice of Feng Shui.

One fundamental tenet of Feng Shui is that qi is circulated by gentle breezes, dispersed by wind, guided by mountains and landforms, and stops at the boundary of water. Water collects and retains qi, the vital life force necessary for well being. Water is yang in relation to mountain, which is yin. The nature of the water element is to nurture and sustain.

For good fortune to manifest, water must activate the appropriate energies, sometimes working in concert with a supporting enhancement in a secondary location. Misfortune may arise when water is placed improperly. Various methods of water placement exist. Some practices are widely known, while others remain closely guarded secrets. The methods presented in our course emphasize the latter. Castle Gate, Mountain and Water Dragon Fan Gua, Jiu Xing Water methods are highly potent techniques, yet the steps to implementation are rarely revealed in the West.

A prior understanding of Xuan Kong Feng Shui is essential to the accurate and most effective employment of the methodologies that are taught. However, the appendix section contains charts and information on the 24 mountains, the He Tu arrangement of the trigrams (bagua), the Nine Eras and other relevant material for ready reference. It is recommended that the choice of direction for water placement at a site be in accord with as many techniques as possible.

Use these secrets wisely, taking note of any cautionary rules.

There can be different takes on this; some people say it’s an evil spirit that gets into a person.

From medical TCM pathology, it is a liver/stomach problem or heart/kidney problem. If we are researching from a 4P perspective, Wood, Earth should be the vital elements we look at. If we can get a hold of records from mental health care professionals, we maybe able to do further research on this.

From the Form School angle, I would look up at the ceilings above the head of the bed for low, slanted ceilings, too bright or too dark ceilings, coffin ceilings, children bunk bed and exposed beams. I would avoid having these above my bed.

I would look at the bed as well; a lot of people place their beds at an angle because of the favorable direction theory they have learned in 8 House. I would rather see the headboard solidly against a solid wall and away from any electrical sockets. I have seen cases where the headboard is nowhere near a solid wall and the occupant of the bed has had troubled sleep.

I would also look under the bed to see what is underneath it. You can store soft materials like clothing, but avoid putting any mirrors under a bed, or any picture or object that’s associated with movement.

Outside of the house, I would check the SE to see if any sha chi coming from that direction, especially linked triangular shaped objects.

From Flying Stars, I would pay attention to the number “4″, such as 3/4 or 4/8 combinations. Sometimes you can look at 5/9 or 2/7/4/9 combination.

From 8 House, I would look into “Men Chu – Liu Sha” for mental instability.

From face reading, I would pay attention to the eyes and face shape.

From palm reading, I would look for little red/white dotted palm (liver palm), boney hands/fingers especially the outer edge of the thumb, or the head line sloping downward toward the Qian palace (the opposite side of the thumb).

It is often said that good design is also good Feng Shui. Generally speaking, I totally agree. However, Feng Shui principles of how Ch’i moves in and around a building, and what kind of effect that has on people, will sometimes be in conflict with interesting architecture or landscape.

1. Does symmetry = balance?

I have seen many floor plans where the architect deliberately placed doorways or windows directly opposite each other. Sometimes there is a whole succession of windows along a wall, and the opposite wall will be a mirror image. I have seen entrances or exterior facades where columns, hedges, and pathways create long straight lines toward a main door. In looking at these designs, the symmetry is obvious. But from a Feng Shui stand point, this is not necessarily harmonious or balanced. Think about nature, and winding meandering paths through gardens and groupings in odd numbers. This is very different than the perfect pairing of windows, doors, or other architectural features. Two windows exactly opposite each other may feel like balance through symmetry from a designer’s training. But this arrangement allows for ch’i (air currents) to either move too quickly through a room and/or the room leaks its vitality too soon.

2. High ceilings:

A room may feel dramatic and larger (intended effect) when the ceilings are high. Most people initially feel good in this kind of room. But the function of the room will determine the appropriateness of high ceilings in Feng Shui theory. It may be hard to concentrate in a room with high ceilings, and it may be difficult to get good sleep as well. Sometimes the good energies which need to be cozy and contained in a small room, will get dissipated in a room with high ceilings.
3. Beams:

The look of exposed beams can also bring personality to a room from a design point. But open beams in a feng-shui-mistakes-to-avoid-in-the-bedroom are known to cause health and relationship problems in Feng Shui theory (in all schools of Feng Shui.)

4.Views from front to back:

A major selling feature in many homes is to create a spectacular view from the entrance, all the way through to the back (showing a garden, or views of a valley or ocean.) But this is not the home you will sell to an adherent of Feng Shui. Once again, the premise is that incoming energy will make a bee-line for the back, escaping too quickly. The mundane result of a house losing its energy is that the occupants will have a hard time saving their money.
5. Angles and odd shapes:

When a building or a single room has an odd shape, (not a square or rectangle) this can make the ch’i boomerang around the room, causing lack of focus, ill health, or arguments. I have often been in very odd-shaped buildings or houses, where the real orientation (of what is the front and what is the back) is also very confusing. Just because a building looks striking from afar doesn’t mean it is a comfortable place to work in. I once saw the design for a new building by some famous architect and it honestly looked like a crumpled piece of paper! This can’t possibly be good Feng Shui. **Keep in mind: there are some buildings which get classified as being good for money, but not good for health and relationships. The ideal is to create a building that is good for both, but given a choice, the priority should be more in favor of people over money.
6. Staircases:

Sometimes the design of a grand, swirling staircase can make a huge statement for the room or entrance. But energetically, a staircase is a conduit for energy. It will swirl and activate whatever it is around. If the stairs are located in a positive section of a building, they can make it even more positive. If they happen to be in a bad location, then the movement they stir up will only further irritate the area. This can only be understood by Feng Shui practitioners who can calculate the “unseen” influences.
7.Aesthetics:

Sometimes a home or commercial property just looks and feels great, and all the visual features are in sync with good Feng Shui principles as well. But every structure has been built facing a particular compass degree, and within a certain time frame, and those two coordinates may produce a house-type that can attract tremendous misfortune, even though it “looks” good. This is the level of Feng Shui that architects find most startling. How could it be that their gorgeous new home can create lawsuits? Or miscarriage? Or accidents? Or divorce?

The good news is that more and more architects are considering working with Feng Shui practitioners, so that the blending of their talents can truly create a superior space– visually, functionally and energetically.

Any living plant or tree is considered the Wood element in Five-Element theory and if Wood is needed to correct an imbalance within the home, then the live plant is more appropriate than wood furnishings. The plant has a nervous system and it can absorb or re-direct chi in a room as well. An example might be the common front door alignment with a back door. Having a live plant somewhere between the aligned entrance and exit could help slow down and buffer chi flow (air currents). The effect is that occupants can be healthier and save their money easier.

Right now there are not a lot of houses which specifically need the Wood element to correct the Flying Star combination of elements in a room. (Unseen influences). But here is an example of where a live plant may be helpful: A house which was built between 1944-1963 AND facing North or South, will have energy at its center which translates: water dominating fire. The way to mitigate this imbalance is to weaken water and strengthen fire and it is done with the Wood element. (Wood makes fire stronger.)

If someone had a floor plan, where the center of the house was open enough to place a live plant (big hallway, living room, etc.), then a plant may help with this imbalance. The problems which can result from water dominating fire include heart or eye problems. Some practitioners debate about whether or not you can treat the center of a structure, unlike other directional areas of the floor plan, but it certainly can t hurt!

Large, tall trees behind or in front of a property can become “virtual” mountains if they are substantially taller than the structure. Some houses and buildings specifically benefit from having a real or virtual mountain on one side of the house, so the tall trees can act as a substitute for a real mountain or hill.

Trees, bushes, and thick plantings surrounding a property can also act to shore up energy which would otherwise flow away. An example of this is a house with significantly lower land level on some part of the property. Planting a hedge or even positioning a row of potted plants can help keep the chi on the property and close to the occupants. This can improve both health and finances. An old-age Feng Shui belief is that a house with a severe slope behind it will be a difficult house to conceive sons in.

Some Feng Shui books refer to trees as possessing spirits and the need to be very careful in terms of what type of tree is planted and whether or not it should ever be uprooted. In many Asian neighborhoods, residents often unnecessarily remove trees in front of houses because of an oversimplified and superstitious way of relating to Feng Shui. There is a notion that a tree in front of a door will block chi or be bad luck. Obviously, if the tree is huge and literally blocks easy access to the door, then there is a problem.

If the tree casts so much shade that an area inside or outside the house is chronically dark, then a good trimming is in order. If the tree is buckling pavement and threatening to damage the house s foundation, then you have problems which supersede Feng Shui theory–or create other Feng Shui problems which are much worse (like a cracked foundation or strangled plumbing.)

Dead or dying plants should be removed as quickly as possible, although I have never promoted the theory that dried flower arrangements have bad Feng Shui. One client has her wedding bouquet mounted to her bathroom wall and it not only looks nice, but also provides her with the happy memory of her wedding day on a regular basis. I can t believe that this is bad Feng Shui in any shape or form.

An odd-shaped lot, like a pie-shaped lot which narrows in the back, can be partially remedied or squared out with proper landscaping. When it is difficult to grow healthy greenery on your property, it may be an indication that the chi in the ground is lacking healthful energies. Some Form School Feng Shui Masters will note the moisture and dark richness of the soil as a routine part of their evaluation. One type of plant which tends to attract ghosts (don t ask me why!), is the banana tree. They often seem to be on the properties of clients who complain of ghosts.

Popular Feng Shui books also like to make a fuss about plants with sharp leaves, as though they were the worst manifestation of “poison arrows.” Except for an actual cactus, I have not seen many plant leaves that I would be the least bit concerned about. For those of you who live near West L.A., drive by a house on the corner of Bundy and Exposition Blvds. You will see large cactus all around the outside of the house close to the windows. I think it is a perfect natural security system.

Color on a large scale can represent an element. On a “large scale” means an entire room or wall or large area rug. When a color defines a room, then for sure you know the vibrations from that color will affect the energy field of the space.

What is an element? Elements are both literal and symbolic. In all of Chinese Metaphysics, which includes feng shui, Chinese Astrology, Chinese medicine, and martial arts, we have something called Five-Element Theory.
The Five Elements are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal. These elements have distinct relationships with eachother which are considered either harmonious or destructive. For instance, water destroys fire. But Wood nurtures or feeds a fire.

Water is best represented by real water, but large surface areas of blue or black can vibrate some of the water element.

Wood is best represented by a live plant, but an entire green wall or green carpeting can also work as the wood element.

Fire is the one element where using real fire could be dangerous, although a stove or oven positioned in the right location can work as fire literally. Fire is the one element where the color is usually substituted and that is any shade of red.

Earth is best represented by real earthen objects made of stone or soil, clay, granite, or concrete. Earth colors range from light to dark tones of yellow, orange or brown.

Metal is often represented with decor or furnishings made of copper, brass, bronze, iron or steel. Metal colors are gold, silver, white or gray.

Some colors, like faint pastels, can go virtually anywhere in a house and not have a negative influence. But a large maroon area rug or a burgundy bed spread could qualify as fire. You would want to enlist the services of a highly trained Flying Star feng shui practitioner in order to know where the extreme colors can be a benefit, or at least not cause harm.

As an example, red color in the right location can actually help diminish a legal problem or vulnerability toward theft. But fire put in the wrong location could trigger a miscarriage or sickness.

Colors can also be seen as a bit subjective and a good feng shui consultant will never insist that a person use a color that the client does not personally like. Whenever we have to see something that we don’t like, it can make us constrict and eventually depress the immune system.

So, there are no hard and fast rules about good colors or bad colors. They all serve a purpose and play off of eachother. It is the groupings of colors that can create a feeling or mood just as much as an individual color. For example, olive green is a nice color, but most people would find it “ruined” if placed next to hot pink. Olive green placed next to brown or gray can be very warm and relaxing however.

The eye sees certain colors faster than others, such as yellow or red. This is exactly why our “slow down” and “stop” lights are yellow and red. Some of the biggest companies use yellow or orange in their signage and logos because they know there is a universal comfort level with earthy colors. Americans also like blue in particular. It can emotionally represent trust, something stable, and cleanliness. Check out the color of your Tide detergent box and you will see both earth and water colors used in the marketing of that product. Or a big furniture company like IKEA uses the yellow and blue color for their company logo.

Color can also be used to change the yin/yang ratio of a room. If a room is very dark it is categorized as yin. The occupants of that room can become depressed or have low energy. Bringing in more cheerful colors is just one way to remedy that room. For a room that is too bright or overly active, the colors can be brought in to cool off the room and make it more mellow.

People often wonder how a feng shui element remedy works. The premise begins with the understanding that the human being is a porous creature who interacts with the environment. Whatever environment you spend the most time in, the essence of that space will cling to you or merge with you. On a mundane level, if you stay in a cold room your own body temperature will go down. If you sit next to a smoker, you will get the odor all over your clothes and hair and breathe it into your lungs. Wherever you go, you pick up on the energy of that space and can be affected by it.

From a feng shui perspective, if you sleep all night in a negative or unbalanced room, then there will be a residual affect on you. If you pass through a door numerous times per day, you will also merge with the “chi” of that space.

By placing physical objects in a room, to correct its imbalance, the changed space will change its affect on you. This might be similar to a person who has long been deficient in certain vitamins, with predictable health problems, regaining their health and inner balance once the person supplements their nutritional deficiency.

What surprises many Westerners, is that humans can be affected by objects or materials outside of their bodies. How can a metal bed frame affect my moods or health? How can a water fountain affect my income or legal battles? This phenomenon is just an extension of the principle that we are very porous beings. While we may filter or deflect some energies, mostly we absorb what is around us.

I have seen many types of people affected by a particular environment in similar ways. It may not matter if the person is healthy or unhealthy, spiritual or not, they will react similarly to the feng shui ingredients of their environment.

I have always downplayed the psychological aspects of feng shui, but even emotional/subjective experiences will eventually turn physical. As an example, if you were subjected regularly to something in your environment that caused you personal stress (like the hideous color of your neighbors house), then eventually it would affect your nervous system or glandular system, contributing to minor or major health problems.

Some feng shui remedies are so subtle that it is astounding how well they work. A clock with a metal-moving pendulum can change the energy of a room, as well as a mirror, a vase of water, a live plant, even the location of a picture on a wall. Natural crystals, prominent colors, the shape of furniture, and the dimensions of a room can also influence the flow and vibrancy of that space. These are just a few examples of perhaps hundreds of feng shui remedies, which can be as powerful as they are inconspicuous.

The following list of objects used in Feng Shui is the start of a compilation and is in no way meant to be exhaustive. I will be adding to this list as time goes on. If you have any suggestions for the list I am happy to receive them and include them in future publications.

Bells – A beautiful sounding bell with quality resonance helps soothe the sickness qi. It can also help to clear up muddied thinking. It is the most effective of the various types of metal qi. It is said that when a bell chimes, it opens a line of communication to heaven, and is therefore good fortune. A bell on the door can serve as a warning that someone has entered the space. Merchants sometimes use bells to announce the arrival of a new customer. Folk lore has it that having a bell near an entrance will keep thieves away.

Wind Chimes – are best used outdoors where the wind can play their music. My favorite wind chimes are of the pedatonic variety. The resonance is beautiful. They are useful countermeasures for negative earth qi and offer powerful assistance to metal qi. Please note that for the windchimes to be an effective metal cure, they should be made of metal rather than wood.

Mobiles – are wonderful objects to bring more yang qi to any environment, be it the garden, a shaded path, or a room indoors. They are also useful to help soften sharp corners in a room. Hanging plants are also good for this, too.

Plants – are used to bring forth wood qi in areas of study and creativity. Live plants are best because they give off good qi along with oxygen.

Light – is the most natural form of fire qi. Light brings yang qi into the space. If the light is too strong and there is glare then it will interfere with concentration. If the light is too little then it will be difficult to use good judgment and difficult to focus on studies. Full spectrum lighting is good in these low light areas. I prefer to point the light at a wall and let it reflect back to the point of use rather than have the light shine directly onto the person. Uplighting is good to help lift the qi in dense or dark areas.

Mirrors – are sometimes used to double objects, like cash registers or customers entering into a restaurant or store. I’ve experimented with this technique over the years and have not found it to be very effective. Other times they ar used to reflect back sha qi. I personally prefer to use mirrors to reflect beauty, particularly if there is a good star coming in a window through a lovely garden. Mirrors are not good in bedrooms because they can create too much yang qi in an intentionally yin environment. Mirrors in the bathroom are good because they are utilitarian and will help create a more yang environment.

Water – is the substance that collects qi. One of the ways water is used in Feng Shui to collect prosperous qi so that the qi may be distributed throughout the home or office to help bring wealth. This can be done by installing a water feature outdoors and directing the flow toward the building. Another way to use water in Feng Shui is to stop bad qi from entering the home or office. This can be done by placing a water feature outdoors and then directing the water flow away from the building. Indoor water features such as fountains and aquariums are also used to collect and move good qi through the building. An important point to remember is that the water must interact with the air or it will not be able to collect the qi.

Large Objects – are used to create indoor “mountains”. Big dressers, sideboards, chests, book shelves, and even heavy tables are welcome homes for the mountain dragons to rest upon. If you have a good mountain dragon in your bedroom it is good to place your good, strong headboard on that wall for better health. Boulders or large rocks make good miniature mountains outdoors. They are very powerful landscaping objects.

Mandarin Ducks – mate for life so it is said that having a pair of these ducks in your bedroom will help attain marital bliss. I recommend, however, that you place them in the form of art, rather than the real thing. Live ducks in the bedroom could be a cause rather than a cure for marital strife. I am curious to hear from you if these ducks work to enhance your marriage. This is one of my resarch projects, so your input will be tabulated. Thanks.

Someone told me that Westerners are too impatient to learn the finer art of Feng Shui, so only simple forms were to be taught here. I disagree.

Since my first introduction to Feng Shui in 1987, I have had the privilege of discovering the finest teacher in the world, Master Joseph Yu http://www.astro-fengshui.com . He has no qualms about teaching the truest form of Feng Shui to Westerners. There is no “dumbing down” in his attitude toward students. Since 1997 I have been teaching Feng Shui in public classes and private classes in the United States and Sweden. What I have learned from my students is that they are not satisfied with one-size-fits-all solutions. In order to begin to whet their appetite for Feng Shui knowledge, they have caused me to study harder and faster than I ever thought I would or could. This has been the reason for my capacity to teach Feng Shui intensive workshops. The knowledge came from Master Yu, the impetus came from my students. The most effective system I have discovered is the Xuan Kong School. We call it the “Time-Space School.” The Eight House system is also very good; however, I appreciate this system most when I cannot determine the facing of a structure. Although I teach both systems, there is nothing like learning from a master. So, if you get the opportunity, dont hesitate to attend Master Yus classes. I send my students to Master Yu and continue my own studies with him. Feng Shui is a “hot item” these days. Unfortunately, the industry has too many half-baked practitioners marketing themselves as “professionals” or “masters.” This trend, of course, is typical of anything “new” to us. So, how do you tell a true professional from an amateur? One way is to listen for questions they will ask you. A professional will want to know, at least, the following: What is your birth date? What are the birth dates of others living in the home with you? What is the compass degree of the facing of your home or office? (If you don’t know, the practitioner should take this reading when s/he arrives.) When was the structure built? What do you want your home or office to provide? When the Feng Shui professional arrives to do the audit you may notice the following actions: Taking a compass reading. Looking at the outside environment and noting water views, mountain views, other structures surrounding the home or office. Locating the center of the home or office. Feng Shui is an honorable and effective system for promoting balance and harmony in your work and home environment. An ethical practitioner will work with you until the balance is achieved and harmony is experienced to the degree it can be through Feng Shui. We must remember that although moving the sofa won’t necessarily be the thing to change an attitude, that movement can impact the environment in such a way that you can come to terms with an attitude.

What is a “Ming Gua”? Simply stated it is the type of qi that surrounds you. This qi is not you but it is that which helps protect you in your environment. This is important when assessing what areas are healthy for you.

The Ming Gua can be equated with its trigram counterpart. The 8 trigrams are located in their corresponding “palaces” or “guas” and in addition to having names, family relationship, element designation, physical areas (example: eyes, feet, hands) they are responsible for, and personalities, they have a numerical designation.

In Feng Shui we work with 9 numbers. There are eight trigrams. The number that is not assigned a trigram is the number 5. He is the emperor and actually resides in the center of the ba gua. If you are a male and your Ming Gua calculations add up to 5, then your Ming Gua will be assigned the number 2. If you are a female and your Ming Gua calculations add up to 5, then your Ming Gua will be the number 8.

When you are calculating your Ming Gua consider whether your birthday is before or after February 4. The Chinese Solar year uses 15 degrees Aquarius as the first day of the new year, which is on or around February 4. If you were born February 3-5 be sure to check your ephemeris for the exact date and time of 15 degrees Aquarius as it may vary.

The formula for calculating your Ming Gua is as follows:

Male

1. Add the numbers in your birth year. For example a male born in 1946 is 1 + 9 + 4 + 6 = 20

2. Add the total until you get a single number.
2 + 0 = 2

3. Subtract the number from 11.
11 2 = 9
(Note: if the number you get is 10 then add until you get a single digit number.) (Note 2: if the number you get is 5 then use number 2 as your Ming Gua.)
Female

1. Add the numbers in your birth year. For example a female born in 1946 is 1 + 9 + 4 + 6 = 20

2. Add the total until you get a single number
2 + 0 = 2

3. Add 4 to the total.
2 + 4 = 6

(Note: If you get a two-digit number, add them until you get a single-digit number.) (Note 2: If you get a 5 use 8 as your Ming Gua.)

Great! Now you have your Ming Gua number. What does it mean?

As I stated earlier, your Ming Gua is the type of qi that surrounds you. It is not you, however. Your Ming Gua will tell you which trigram and its associations you relate to the best, how each of the eight magnetic directions impact you, and help you understand interactions with others based on the five element interactions.

Although the information below is not exhaustive, it will get you started in the correct manner to best utilize your space. The Best Directions are listed from most effective to next best effective.

What can we do when Kun (2 star) and the Emperor (5 star) come together in the same space?

Yes, we may know that metal is a cure for both the 2 and the 5. But what kinds of metal do we use for them? Do we use salt and water with coins? Do we use the lovely calabash? Do we use a golden cd with piano or guitar music? Do we use the chiming clock; and if so, should it have a pendulum or no pendulum? What kind of chime should it have? Can we use wind chimes? If so, for whom and what kind? Will one kind work for both types of qi?

Kun and the Emperor are both earth qi. Kun is yin while the Emperor is yang.

The two types of metal qi we have are Dui and Qian. Dui is a young female and therefore, yin. Qian is the father and the Heaven trigram; therefore, yang.

The Emperor greatly respects Heaven. Heaven is always moving. A strong metal qi is produced with the sound of a beautiful chime that is solemn and dignified such as the famous Westminster chimes. It must be resonant and should be able to be heard throughout the home or office. The perpetual motion is provided by the gently swinging pendulum of the clock.

Placing a calabash in the area of Kun (also fondly referred to as Mother Earth) is very effective. She loves her lively, lovely daughter, Dui. The calabash should have an open mouth to capture the sickness qi emitted by Kun. This open mouth gives her the trigram Dui. I have seen many instances where the sickness qi actually transformed into healing qi with the aid of the calabash along with other circumstances.

So, when Kun and the Emperor are in the same location, it is important to have both the chiming clock and the calabash.

Why not wind chimes? The Emperor does not like the knocking and banging of the chimes when the wind is strong. He does like the sound. If you have another 2 in an area that can have very long bass pentatonic chimes, then the chimes are very good for the 2 Kun. Kun likes them. The sound of the chimes will travel to the 5 Emperor and he will be pleased. You should still have a chiming clock, though, since the chimes and the pendulum are regular like Heaven.

The Emperor loves the color of golden yellow. The color I have found most effective is Mellow Yellow by Behr which can be found at Home Depot. In the case of the 2 and 5 together, the yellow color is very important since it will bring the brightness necessary to keep away the ghosts that love to congregate around Kun and the Emperor. I use yellow paint and a lamp that gives up lighting in the area.

When Mom and the Emperor are both happy we have better lives.

I was asked recently What are the pillars in the Four Pillars? So I am writing this article to begin explaining the concept and some of the terms of Four Pillars of Destiny.

I will start with the Five Types of Qi commonly called the Five Elements. It could be said that the Five Types of Qi are the building blocks to the world as we know it like amino acids are to protein.

The Five Types of Qi are named Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They are not the actual items of wood, etc., but they act like their namesakes. These Five Types of Qi also have their yin and yang attributes. Yin is the quieter of the two while Yang is the more active of the two. This is easy to understand because we all have our quiet times and our active times.

Yang Wood is like a tree, tall, sturdy, stubborn, and ever growing upward. Yin Wood is like a shrub or grass, tactful and unyielding, ever growing. Yin Wood is actually stronger than Yang Wood because Yin Wood is more graceful and knows how to bend under pressure then come back strong, but not break like Yang Wood. Yang Fire is like a forest fire, hot, burning high without stopping. Yin Fire is like a furnace fire, hot, burning slowly, giving heat without scorching. Yang Earth is hard, crusty soil like the ground in a desert with no rain for a long period of time. Yin Earth is like garden soil, fluffy and loamy, rich in nutrients to grow wonderful food. Yang Metal is outward piercing, intelligence that needs to know everything, aggressive and strong. Yin Metal is inward looking, intelligence that has wisdom, beautiful and powerful. Yang Water is like an ocean, deep and very active with many waves. Yin Water is like a lake, deep and calm on the surface but strong currents underneath.

These types of Qi also come in combinations that we call the 12 animals. The 12 animals are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. These are the guys that you see on the placemats at some Chinese restaurants.

One other thing that is important to know is that the year on which Four Pillars is calculated is not the Gregorian Year. It is the Chinese Solar Year. It doesnt start on January 1st. It stars anywhere from February 4th to the 6th. So if you were born in January (say) 1946 you would do your calculations based on 1945. The calculations are based on the solar return of the sun and the subsequent cycles of the suns orbit.

Now we can get to the definition of the pillars. There are four pillars in the Four Pillars of Destiny Chart. Each pillar has an animal at the bottom and one of the Five Types of Qi in Yin or Yang expression at the top.

The first pillar is calculated on the year of birth so it is called the Year Pillar. The second pillar is calculated on the month of birth so it is called the Month Pillar. The third pillar is calculated on the day of birth so it is called the Day Pillar. The fourth pillar is calculated on the hour of birth so it is called the Hour Pillar.

The Five Types of Qi in their Yin and Yang expressions are called The Ten Heavenly Stems and the 12 Animals are called The Twelve Earthly Branches. The qi interacts in specific ways with each other, just like we do in groups of people or families. The qi does all kinds of things like combine, clash, strengthen, weaken, assist, and control.

The Four Pillars of Destiny astrologer can look at these interactions and tell you your destiny. Reading the chart can tell the family background, the relationship with the parents, grandparents, children and marriage as well as how you function in the public, with superiors, peers, and subordinates.

The most important Pillar is the Day Pillar. The stem (top) is the Day Master. That is you your spirit. The branch (bottom) is the marriage palace. It will tell you the quality of your marriage.

The Month Pillar is called the Parents Palace. It is where you can see the relationship between you and your parents. You can also read your childhood in this pillar and there will be an indication of the type of family in which you grew up.

The Hour Pillar is called the Children Palace. It is where you can see the relationship between you and your children. This can also tell you about your old age.

The Year Pillar is called the Grandparents Palace. It is where you can see the relationship between you and your grandparents. It can also represent your family background and society. This can show subtle impacts on a persons achievement.

Of course there is much, much more to this art, but this article is intended to give you some basic understanding of what the pillars represent. If you want to learn more check out Master Joseph Yu’s correspondence course or his live seminar in Toronto this August. You can see his schedule or sign up at http://www.astro-fengshui.com I will be there. Also, if you are in the central Texas area in September I will be teaching Feng Shui here in Greater Pflugerville.

May your Destiny be filled with great love, joy, health, and abundance.

The Pig is a fun and enlightening personality blessed with patience and understanding. People born under the sign of the Pig enjoy life and all it has to offer, including family and friends. They are honest and thoughtful and expect the same of other people. Pigs can be perceived as oblivious or gullible because they do care about others so much that they will do just about anything for a friend in need.

Years of the Pig

Last in the cycle, Pig Years follow the Dog Years and recur every twelfth year. The Chinese New Year does not fall on a specific date, so it is essential to check the calendar to find the exact date on which each Pig Year actually begins.

1911*1923*1935*1947*1959*1971*1983*1995*2007

THE SIGN OF THE PIG

“Its better to give than to receive” would probably be the Pigs motto. Pigs are more comfortable giving of their own time or attention than they are to ask others for it. They do not find asking for help an easy task and would rather carry the burden themselves. Pigs will do anything they can to maintain a sense of peace amongst family or friends. This can lead to a tendency to be taken advantage of, but Pigs basically forgive and forget everything. They are compassionate souls who simply want to keep the peace.

PIG FACTS:

People born in the Year of the Pig share certain characteristics. The Pig Sign is an abbreviated way of characterizing that individuals personality. Following are features associated with the Sign of the Pig.

Twelfth in order, Chinese nameZHU, sign of honesty

Hour9pm-10:59pm MonthNovember

Western CounterpartScorpio

CHARACTERISTICS

Hardworking, Giving, Willing, Helpful, Materialistic, Gullible, Oblivious, Obstinate

IN YOUR ELEMENT

The characteristics of the Pig Sign are tempered by on eof the five Chinese elements of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth overlaying a 5-year cycle of characteristics on the original 12-year cycle.
THE METAL PIG 1911 AND 1971

Feng Shui pronounced Fung Shway is the Chinese ancient art of placement and balance of energy. For about 5,000 years, Feng Shui has been practiced. Feng Shui began by locating the best site for Chinese ancestral graves.

Housed in a circle of the Tai Chi is a symbol of yin and yang; you know the black swirl with a tiny white dot and the white swirl, with a tiny black dot; they are known as opposites. The Tai Chi represents everything contained within the universe. As the centuries passed, from that mysterious circle of yin and yang, Feng Shui developed into a unique resource. It influenced ones surroundings by attracting the positive aspects of energy, essentially by neutralizing the negative. Understanding the five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water accomplished this.

In Chinese philosophy the five elements have their own direction, attribute, shape, color or colors, and a plethora of other representations. The elements work with or against each other; sometimes they even cancel each other out, if applied properly. Feng Shui practitioners believe, how much or too little of each element can truly have a profound effect our daily lives and surroundings.

Over many centuries, Traditional Feng Shui, or Compass school, was widely practiced in China. By trial and error and with proper application of the elements and a compass called a Lo Pan, many other schools of thought evolved. Form school developed and grew. It was based upon, how humble farmers raised their crops, by planting in the best physical location. The mountains from behind protected their crops from the wind. In the front, the gentle flowing streams of water nourished the fields. That is how Feng Shui got its name, wind, water.

Then, there was an awakening in America; a fairly new concept called BTB (Tibetan Tantric Buddhist Black Hat Sect) came along. It was born in the early 1980s and is attributed to Professor Lin Yun, who teaches this particular application of Feng Shui, an approach that does not use the compass, but a much less complex instrument called the Bagua. In Chinese, bagua means eight segments; ba means eight, gua means segment or part. The bagua does not follow the compass or true directional space. The entrance of a home and business or garden is called the mouth of ch’i, ch’i meaning energy. It is always in the northern segments, on the Bagua. Each segment of the bagua has an attribute or life pathway, direction, color, and a symbol associated with it. For example the Fame segment of the bagua is in the South, its color is red and its symbol is a triangle. Metaphorically speaking, a feng shui practitioner follows the bagua like a master chief would follow a recipe aligning the bagua with the mouth of chi, placing all the proper elements, or ingredients, within each area. The result is the best mix or creation, for all who share in the finished product.

Also, vital, in the practice of BTB is, daily meditation and right intention. When the practitioners mind, body and soul are clear and focused, the proper alignment of energy or a transcendental cure may be offered. Transcendental cures are very different form standard cures; they are spiritual and mystical in nature, seeming at times, to defy logic.

Clearing clutter is also one of the a main factors in Feng Shui. It is like being in the cleanest and most sanitary kitchen, (the kitchen can be synonymous with any place in our surroundings). It provides an unobstructed work area, which makes room for new and improved recipes. Preparation in an uncluttered and clean space makes room for abundance. Not necessarily more, but a full measure of what is needed. Abundance is invited inside the cleared and clean space, so that every individual can create what they need most in their lifes diet, a balance. Wealth is always welcomed, but sometimes wealth comes in many different flavors, not just money, but wealth of career, knowledge, family, health, fame, romance, children, travel, or by drawing people into our lives that can be helpful in many ways. Whatever one craves, it can be found through Feng Shui. If we enter a messy kitchen, or heaven forbid, an uncleanly one, most individuals would probably stop cooking. They would leave the premises and eat elsewhere, or only eat to survive. It seems, thats what many people are doing today, just surviving. They are missing out on the ambiance and taste of the finest food for the soul, which I believe can be had through Feng Shui.

Food for the soul, an awareness of ones surroundings, with a good intention, along with the proper application of Feng Shui is like having the most delicious, nutritious meal in our daily living and spiritual lives. This is what the Feng Shui practitioner prepares and then serves, by passing along lifes recipes to those who partake in the essence of the experience of fine placement, harmony and balance. I believe it is the equivalency of dining at one of the worlds finest restaurants, the ambiance, along with superb food is experienced. The master chief is the Feng Shui practitioner who prepares the finest food for the soul and saviors every moment in its preparation.

Whether using a pan or Lo Pan, fork or bagua, these instruments connect us with the food that we need, the life energy that keeps us strong, happy and satisfied and most importantly, alive. Imagine trying to eat with your hands. Not having the proper utensils, like a pot to cook in or a fork to eat with. The same holds true for do-it-yourself Feng Shuiers, without the proper tools, things can get mighty messy. Even in the art of dying, the master Feng Shui practitioner, like the master chief, knows that the proper recipe for success is following directions. They recall that the very foundation and essence of Feng Shui was the proper location and direction of gravesites. This is the soul of Feng Shui.

Feng Shui is a good recipe to follow; it’s the essence of good taste. It’s the real deal, one of the best “Soul foods” you’ll ever have. As the adage goes, How do you know how it tastes, unless youve tried it?

There may be more to success than just blind luck. The Chinese have developed systems over millennia that allow us to predict the best times to teach, learn, negotiate, travel, buy real estate, get married, and a multitude of other activities. These systems also tell us when to stay home, be still, contemplate, listen, or just stay in bed.

Date Selection is one of these systems. You can see general trends for the day then customize those to your own specific qi patterns. For an example of the general trends please click on Date Selection Calendar at my website http://www.FSRC.net I have actually combined systems and worked out the conflicts to give the purest information for the general public.

For customization it is necessary to know your Four Pillars Chart and understand the interplay of the types of qi that make up you and your destiny then see how that works with the qi of the day.

Determining your Ming Gua will give you the directions to face or move in for specific results.

Sound complicated? Well, it is. Fortunately there are professionals who can deal with this for you.

My Date Selection Calendar is free every month. If you want to see what is happening up to a year from the current date then the cost is $30 (US) for a year subscription. Plus I am happy to provide paid subscribers up to 5 special date selections a year (marriage, moving, travel, negotiations, etc.).

Four Pillars readings are available through most of the practitioners listed on this site, including myself.

Best of all you can learn how to do all of this yourself.

Master Joseph Yu is coming to Austin, Texas to teach Four Pillars of Destiny this March 13-16, 2004. Then he is returning July 17-20 to teach Professional Yijing, July 21-22 to teach Business Feng Shui.

Remember, good luck is being at the right place at the right time.

Feng Shui should shed its mysterious veil and go under scientific scrutiny. The origin of Feng Shui (more correctly named “Kan Yue”) is a combination of town-planning, environmental improvement, architecture and interior decoration. Ancient Chinese lived alongside the Yellow River. Their primary concern was to shield against ill winds and untamed waters. As society grew in size and complexity, Feng Shui had to deal with fertility, fame and fortune as well. The philosophies of the Confucianist and Taoist dominated China for thousands of years. Feng Shui theory had sprung from these ideas without the slightest doubt. It is unfortunate that ancient Feng Shui masters were taught to be selfish and they were not to teach all they knew to their disciples. In this way, the knowledge of Feng Shui deteriorated quickly and pseudo-Feng Shui sprouted like weeds in spring.

The Confucianists consider man as part of the Universe he lives in. Man should respect what Mother Nature bestows on him and not to act against Heaven. This in fact is what man should do to protect environment. Furthermore, a man’s path of life is influenced by Heaven luck, Earth luck and Man luck. A modern way of saying this is that a man’s path of life is described by three elements: time, space, and action. The time element is the luck function of a man in terms of time with his birth moment as initial condition. The space element is the place of birth of a man and the place where he lives. The element of action is what a man does. If a man does the right thing at the right time and right place, he will be fortunate. Otherwise, he will encounter hardship. To pursue Earth luck is simply to find a place in harmony with Nature to live in and to work. Can you say this is superstition?

What Feng Shui talks about is “Chi”. Since mass and energy are interchangeable, chi can be in the form of matter or energy or a combination of the two. Therefore, chi can be visible, invisible, or partially visible and partially invisible. Ancient Chinese classified all things in Nature into five types: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. In fact, all things are a combination of these primary bases. Different combinations have different influences, some are fortunate and some are evil. Feng Shui is in fact the study of the distribution of “chi” in a location. Such a distribution also varies with time. It has, in fact, a solid scientific foundation laid upon the concrete stone of Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy and Geography.

Feng Shui is well received by folks in North America. It has developed quickly in the past two decades. Unfortunately, the kind of Feng Shui practiced does not talk about wind and water at all. Therefore it is only “Feng Shui without wind and water”.

The distribution of Chi is affected by the “form” and the “formula”. Since the form of the surroundings of a location is visible and can be felt, it is easy to understand the Feng Shui implications. The formula, on the other hand, is difficult for the average man on the street to understand. A real Feng Shui Master must take into consideration both the form and the formula. It is a logical deduction that the so called “Form School” and the so called “Formula School” are both half-filled bottles only.

To study the Feng Shui of a residence or a business location, four steps are taken.

Study the surroundings, see that the mountains and rivers are suitably located. In cities, buildings and roads are considered virtual mountains and rivers.
Measure how the house is sitting and facing. Use formula to locate stars on the floor plan and survey.
Plan the color scheme and decorations so as to enhance the fortunate chi and suppress the evil chi.
Calculate the Life-Gua of each member of the family and make sure the bedrooms and living areas are in harmony with everyone.
The above are only guidelines that a knowledgeable Feng Shui master follows. It cannot be explained in a few words how each step is to be taken.

In general the motive of a Feng Shui audit is for the ease of mind. The use of an aquarium is to employ the water element to promote fortune. It is a wrong concept that the fish can sacrifice for the master of the house when evil chi attacks. If a fish tank is placed suitably, it can bring wealth to the house. If it is placed in the wrong corner, it can also bring misfortune. The use of a chime is to employ the metal element to dissolve and absorb the evil chi which causes sickness. Placed inappropriately, the chime can also be harmful. The Ba Gua mirror is the most useless Feng Shui utensil. If such a mirror is hung on the door, it simple tells people that the house owner is ignorant and superstitious.

Feng Shui, when used correctly, can bring harmony to a site. Sometimes it is abused to create a Feng Shui War between neighbors. Since harmony is disturbed, no one will be a winner.

“In measuring directions in Feng Shui studies, should the true north or the magnetic north be taken as reference?”

This interesting question has been around for over 1000 years. Those who favor the use of true north think that Feng Shui consists of Astronomy and Geography as the name Kan Yue implies. Therefore, true direction must be used. Those who favor the use of magnetic north think that since the luopan is used, the magnetic north shows the direction of Zi-Wu on the luopan. Therefore, magnetic direction should be used. Let us analyse this from various aspects.

What is true north?

Since the earth is rotating about an axis that cuts the globe at two points, we shall call these two points the true north pole and true south pole. This axis of rotation is tilted at 66o 33′ to the plane of the elliptic path of the earth around the sun. When this axis is extended, it should meet on the surface of a fictitious “Heaven Globe”. Since the Polaris appears to be fixed in the sky and all other stars revolve around it, the true north is well defined.

True north pole and south pole are referred to the points where the axis cuts the earth. However, this axis of rotation is not fixed in direction. It undergoes a precession with a period of 25,800 years.

The axis of rotation of the earth points to the Polaris today. In 3,000 B.C.E., it pointed to Thuban. In 14,000 C.E., it will point to Vega. In 22,800 C.E., it will point again to Thuban.

From this we can see that there is actually no such thing as the true north. It varies with time. For this reason, we shall call this the “astronomical north” instead of true north.

The question is rephrased now to read, “In measuring directions in Feng Shui studies, should the astonomical north or the magnetic north be taken as reference?” We must also remember that the astronomical north is not fixed but changing with time with a 25,800 year cycle. In maps, we conveniently use what is known as the “grid north”. The difference between the astronomical north and the grid north is about half a degree but this is changing slowly with time. For surveying purposes, the grid north is used.

What is magnetic north?

The model of a magnet is a dipole where magnetic force radiates from the magnetic north pole to the magnetic south pole. The earth as a huge magnet has its magnetic north pole near the geographic south pole.

The earth’s magnetism is caused by the flow of electrons in its fluid metallic core. The fluid core is perpectually in motion. This explains why the earth’s magnetism varies with time. The move is quite gradual. Thus, the earth may be visualized as a huge magnet with its magnetic poles moving. The change in the location of the magnetic north is known to as secular variation.

It is interesting to note that the change of the location of the north magnetic pole is affected also by astronomical factors. Solar storms affect the magnetic compass reading. In general, the relationship between the astronomical north, the grid north, and the magnetic north is given by the diagram below.

Documented Evidence

The earliest document about the choice of reference is found in [Guan Shi Di Li Zhi Meng] written by Guan Lu in the Wei Kingdom (220 – 265 C.E.) of the Three Kingdom Period. In Section 68 in the Eighth Roll of this book we find the following sentence:

“The needle points Kan-Li determining the starting and ending locations of yin and yang.”

This indicates that the magnetic north was referred to in determining the eight trigrams of the Hou Tian Ba Gua. Kan is the trigram in the north and Li is the trigram in the south.

In the Tang Dynasty, the Feng Jin (Slit Needle) was invented to read 7.5o before the magnetic reading. This probably was the approximate value of the declination in China about 1000 years ago. Feng Jin is commonly translated as the seam needle. This is one of the meanings of the character “feng” from dictionaries. The needle in this context has nothing to do with knitting but we can understand how the misunderstanding came. One meaning of the character “feng” is a slit. In fact, when the compass needle points at the midpoint of Zi (North 0o), people imagined that a fictitious needle would point at the boundary between Zi and Ren. In other words, it falls into the slit between Zi and Ren.

San He Luo Pan: The outer ring is the Tian Pan while the inner ring is the Di Pan. The midpoint of Zi in the Tian Pan falls on the slit between Zi and Qui in the Di Pan.

The invention of this ring on the luopan was to read the direction on an astronomical compass. This ring is called the Heaven Plate (Tian Pan). The magnetic needle is now called the Proper Needle (Zheng Jin). The ring is called the Earth Plate (Di Pan). Thus,

Heaven plate reads heaven qi and earth plate reads earth qi.

Later, people find that the fixed 7.5o does not agree with the changing declination and used the sun’s shadow at noon to read the astronomical direction. Instead of using the Tian Pan, a sundial is used in addition to the Luopan.

What do we study in Feng Shui?

To find out whether we should refer to the magnetic north or the astonomical north in applying feng shui formulas, we must first of all know what we are studying.

[1] Luan Tou (Forms)

Qing Nang Jing says, “There are the five planets* in Heaven, (and correspondingly) there are five elements on earth. In Heaven, there are stars and galaxies. On Earth, there are mountains and rivers. Qi moves on Earth and its (corresponding) shape displays in Heaven.” This idea comes from Xici Zuan of the Yijing, “In Heaven, the image is formed. On Earth, it becomes shape. The transformation is seen.”

This, when literally taken, leads to mapping everything in Heaven to everything on Earth. The situation becomes ridiculous. In fact, what the Yijing says means that the trigrams were built according to the images in Heaven and the shapes on Earth to understand the transforming of yin and yang lines leading to the transformation of the abstract and the concrete.

On the other hand, we do not have to know exactly what is happening in Heaven. All we need to know is how the Earth is affected due to these happenings in the Universe that includes Heaven and Earth. The abstract idea of Heaven now becomes the concept of Time. Heaven is in perpetual motion meaning that time is propagating with no beginning, no end, and no stopping.

When ancient people studied forms, they were interested in protection and production. A site is auspicious if it is protected by mountains with water running and collected at the front. To describe this scenario more vividly, Feng Shui masters in the past borrowed the terms of the four celestial animals from ancient astronomy. They are not related at all. So are the five elements and the five planets. The ancient scholars always wanted to link Heaven, Earth and Man together. Some modern scholars fall into this trap and their vision becomes like that of the frog in the well.

[2] Li Qi (Rationale of Qi)

The existence of qi itself is axiomatic. People who do not understand science but pretend to be scientific-minded say that qi cannot be proved to exist by scientific instruments. The fact is that our existence depends on the existence of qi. Without qi, our body is just some assembly of chemical constituents incapable of living. Our planet provides us with an environment suitable for our survival because it can generate living qi and protect us from killing qi. Both living qi and killing qi come from the universe. It includes our earth, the solar system, and all the galaxies.

In the study of feng shui, we do not bother about the birth and death of stars, solar storms, the waxing and waning of the moon and the happenings in other planets. We are in terested in the total effect of the happenings in the universe. These are described by what we call star charts. We have the star chart of the earth without considering the influence of celestial bodies. This is the Luo Shu, which is also known as the Earth Chart (Di Pan). We have the star charts of the earth at various times. This is known as the Heaven Chart (Tian Pan). When a house is constructed, we have a star chart of the house. This is subdivided into the Facing Chart (Xiang Pan) and Mountain Chart (Shan Pan).

Earth Chart: The most important energies of the earth are (1) Gravity and (2) Magnetism.

Gravity is directed towards the center of the earth. This property is the most important characteristic of the element “earth”. It is therefore situated at the center. It is designated as the number 5 in the Luo Shu.

Magnetism radiates from near the geographic south pole of the earth. Radiation is the most important characteristic of the element “fire”. It is therefore situated on the top part of the Luo Shu to indicates the south. It is designated as the number 9.

Note that the masters in the past used the four seasons to explain the Ba Gua. It is a good way to make things easy to understand. We have to remember that this was done in China with four seasons. In the tropics the teaching will be ineffective as people cannot link heat with the south. Heat comes from all directions. It will cause more problem if it is taught in the southern hemisphere as their experience is just opposite. It must be noted that the teaching uses analogy only. It is a way to help people understand. Unfortunately people take it as the reasons behind the Ba Gua. This leads to great misunderstanding. What is wrong is the way of teaching, not the Ba Gua itself. The Ba Gua and the Luo Shu are still universal.

The Luo Shu: The teaching using the four seasons in temperate northern hemisphere should be abolished to avoid misunderstanding.

The greatest disappointment Albert Einstein had was his inability to successfully create the Unified Field Theory. Ancient Chinese, instead of trying to unify the different energy fields (or qi fields rather), tried to diversify, mingle and superimpose various qi fields. To study the Earth Chart, we definitely have to refer to the magnetic north as the reference. In other words, we are studying the effect of gravity and magnetism to see how they generate qi in the eight directions relative to a point. Care must be taken that we are referring to the changing earth’s energy. It does not matter where you are, when the luopan shows Zi-Wu, it means Zi-Wu. There is no need to adjust for declination to convert the chart to the astronomical north. The same place may have a different energy chart 20 years later. This is reasonable. We do not expect our earth to be unchanging. What is unchanging is the method, not the result. If we use astronomical north, then we are assuming the change is so slow that it is neglible unless we are talking about 1000 years. This is unreasonable. If the earth’s magnetic field is changing , why must the Earth Chart be unchanging? So, don’t be surprised to find that the facing direction measured today is different from one measured 30 years ago.

Heaven Chart: The Heaven Chart is a result of the changing qi coming from the universe at different times. It may be due to the different allignment of the planets and stars. However, we are not trying to study the cause. We just want to study the effect. The effect superimposes on the Earth Chart. Ancient Chinese developed a formula (or rather, an algorithm), to derive the Heaven Chart from the Luo Shu. Since the measurement is to be taken on earth, and since the formula is from the Earth Chart, it is also reasonable to refer to the magnetic north and not the astronomical north. If we actually study the stars, then it is more reasonable to use the astronomical north.

It should be noted that the luopan is an instrument on which the twenty four mountains and other formulas are embedded. In Xuan Kong Feng Shui, the Zheng Jin (with reference to magnetic north) is used. In San He Feng Shui, the Feng Jin (supposedly with reference to astronomical north) is used for locating water. It is because water is moving and Heaven is moving. In measuring mountains and facing, the San He School also uses the Zheng Jin.

Conclusion

All directions are relative. There is no such thing as absolute north (or true north). The astronomical north refers to a moving axis of rotation of the earth. The grid north refers to a standard way of making maps. The magnetic north refers to a moving dipole in the earth. The study of feng shui builds its analysis on superimposing qi fields of which gravity and magnetism are major players. Although feng shui is not a science, it cannot be detached entirely from science. Magnetic field being one of the two most important fields on earth, feng shui has to be based on the magnetic directions. Magnetic north, and not astronomical north, is therefore to be used in measuring directions.

* The five planets are Mercury (water), Venus (metal), Mars (fire), Jupiter (wood) and Saturn (earth).

This is the most important article in Master Shen’s book. Unfortunately a lot of people who claim to practice Xuan Kong Feng Shui either have not studied this article or they do not understand the teaching. Therefore I translate this into English so that westerners can understand real Xuan Kong Feng Shui. It also helps modern Chinese people who have difficulties understanding older Chinese writing.

Qing Nang Xu says, “The dragon god on mountain does not go into water, (and) the dragon god in water does not go up (a) mountain.”

This sentence is the central button for good or evil and the key to fortune and misfortune. It is the most important entry door to Xuan Kong theory. Mountain controls people while water controls wealth. Whether the dragon god favors or disfavors immensely affect everything. If they are accidentally reversed, it will hurt the people and cause loss of money. It will bring hundreds of unfortunate happenings. Therefore, the dragon god assigned by the mountain chart must not go down the water. The wang {vibrant} star must be placed on a high mountain and solid land. The dragon god assigned by the water chart must not go up the mountain. The wang star must be placed in ponds, rivers or where it is low and damp [Note 1]. This is the important rule for arranging the mountain and facing stars. It should not be reversed.

Now I will illustrate this by a Period 7 Yi mountain Xin facing setting. The rest are similar. To arrange the mountain dragons, we find that 5 in the time star chart is on the mountain side {sitting palace}. Use 5 at the center. Since Yi is yin, it moves backward. The flying star 7 arrives at the mountain {sitting palace}. 7 being the ruling star is the wang {vibrant} qi. 8 is assigned to Kun. 8 being the future is sheng qi. Therefore the 7 and 8 directions must be topographically high. If 9 in Kan (also) meets highland, then the dragon gods on mountain are at appropriate places. When the sheng and wang qi are put on high places, it is beneficial to the fertility of people. The weakening qi 6 is at the Xun direction. The dead qi 4 is at the Qian direction. If the Xun and Qian directions are high, then the weakening and dead qi will have power. Therefore it is suitable to have water in the Xun and Qian directions. Then the weakening and dead qi are placed in water and the sha is eliminated.

To arrange the water dragons, we find that 9 in the time star chart is on the facing side. Use 9 at the center. Since 9 is Ding which is yin, it moves backward. The flying star 7 on the facing chart arrives at the facing direction. 7 is the current periods vibrant (wang) qi. 8 is at Qian and is the future sheng qi. Therefore, if there is water at Dui and Qian directions, then the dragon gods in water are at appropriate places. When the sheng and wang qi are put in water, it indicates a vibrant source of wealth. 6 is weakening qi while 5 and 4 are dead qi. If there is water, then the weakening and dead qi will have power and the sha is preserved. Therefore, the three directions Gen, Li and Kan are suitable to be high and they do not like water to appear. In that case, the weakening and dead qi will be placed on a high location.

It should be noted that when we arrange the water dragons, the sheng and wang ones are suitable to be placed in water. At the same time, when we arrange the mountain dragons, the weakening and dead ones should also be placed in water. We can see that the water in Dui and Qian directions can kill two birds with one stone. On the other hand, if there are mountains in Zhen, Kun and Kan directions, they are all appropriately located.

In conclusion, if you can distinguish the weakening and vibrancy of the five elements to incorporate into the dragon gods [Note 2], then you not only can avoid (the timely water stars) going up the mountain and (the timely mountain stars) going down into water, the wonderful application of receiving the mountain and eliminating the sha also paves the way for you.

Note 1: It is obvious that real water is preferred, not just low land. In cities, roads can also be considered rivers.

Note 2: The weakening and vibrancy of the five elements to incorporate into the dragon gods the five elements refer to the element of the water and mountain. Water and mountain can also be categorized into the five types according to the shape. Since 7 is metal, the best water for 7 is earth shaped water or metal shaped water. Fire shaped water will be worst. Although 8 is earth, fire shaped water is inappropriate because it is a bad form of water. Earth shaped water is the best. Master Shen was telling people the importance of incorporating forms with the stars.

Comment: In the example, supplementary note must be added. To use this technique, the most important thing is to support the sheng and wang stars. If it can eliminate the sha at the same time, it will be perfect. To have water in Dui and Qian directions will serve both purposes. To have mountain in Zhen, Kun and Kan directions also serve both purposes. However, if we have mountain in Gen, it will give power to the dead qi 2 that causes sickness. For Li, a mountain is appropriate. Although 1 is dead qi, it is usable qi.

At Feng Shui Research Center, you will learn Xuan Kong technique at a higher level not available in other schools.

After the conclusion of the Feng Shui seminar in Moscow, a student approached me and asked if I would be interested in providing Feng Shui consultancy service to a US$20 million real estate project. “I would be most interested if certain conditions are satisfied,” I replied.

“Please let me know what the conditions are,” the student was eager to find out.

“Firstly, I must be involved right from the beginning and work closely with the architect. Secondly,” I continued, “the owner of the project must have some understanding of Feng Shui and will support me when there is a grave difference in opinion between the architect and me.”

“No problem!” the student exclaimed. “I am the owner of the project.”

A business meeting was immediately arranged with the architect, the business consultant and the project director of his company flown in from another city. A contract was prepared and the general director emphasized that if I was not satisfied with the terms, everything was negotiable. I looked at the offer and signed the contract immediately without hesitation. I knew I could ask for more and they would be happy to comply. But that is not how I conduct business. The terms are satisfactory. Marina Shulman will act as my assistant and interpreter on this project.

The enticing element is that I will be involved right from the start. It will be the first documented project of this magnitude that truly deploys Feng Shui techniques in its development.

This real estate project is to construct a commercial center about 10 minutes driving distance from the city center of Russia’s third largest city. The site is located on a 50,000 square meters stretch of land with a river coming from the southwest to join the River Volga in the north. Construction cost is estimated at US$20 million. The complex will have 32,000 square meters of floor space for all kinds of establishments. Shops, cinemas, fine dining and sporting facilities for bowling or skating can all be found under the same roof.

Basically, the landform satisfies the Ling Shen and Zheng Shen directions. The major highway is to the east of the property and it is quite easy to have the building facing Jia (E1). The star chart will be as follows:

Stay tuned for the next article when the design is finalized. I will select an auspicious date for the ground activation ceremony, probably in April 2005. On this important day, the surveyor will also be present to ensure that the facing is according to the precise fen jin that I will choose.

New Year is a good time to assess how the Feng Shui of your home has affected your life. Maybe you’ve had a consultation during the year, or you’ve been reading some Feng Shui books and started to apply the techniques to your own home or business.

Feng Shui can take up to three months to take effect. This is evidenced by an old Feng Shui master’s tale; he is Master Shen Zhu Reng and he lived in the Ching Dynasty, about 200 years ago.

Master Shen is of the Xuan Kong lineage (that is, the time-space school of Feng Shui that considers the space in which we live, and also the time Period in which we live there). This is an holistic school of Feng Shui, just as we change, time changes, so our buildings Feng Shui changes as well.

One of the branches of the Xuan Kong school is the famous Flying Stars School (Fei Xing Pai).

Master Shen first studied the San He (3 Combinations) methods of Feng Shui (not part of the Xuan Kong School). In fact he spent 10 years of his life studying this school; at the end of which he declared that the San Yuan Jiu Yun (Three Cycles and Nine Periods) methods, based on space and time were far superior and he regretted spending so much time, which he considered was wasted.

As you’ve gathered by now there’s many schools and techniques of Feng Shui, which is where the confusion arises. Each school has different formulas used to calculate the Feng Shui of a building. The formulas are based on the earths magnetic field (measured with a compass), and various mathematical factors. Its actually quite scientific.

Master Shen has one very famous case study. His friend, a scholar, was sitting for the imperial Examination so he could earn the right to a position in the government. In the old days in China this was the utmost aim of a scholar, to be in the service of the emperor.

Master Shen’s friend asked him to check the Feng Shui of his house. Master Shen agreed and went to visit him. After inspecting the internal and external environment, he declared, “You have very good academic energy but you are not making the best use of it; move your bed from here to here and within three months youve receive a post as Governor of that particular county.”

Master Shen’s friend said to him, “I am disappointed, how could you be so accurate to know that I will be assigned to that particular county and within that period of time? I find it hard to believe.”

Nevertheless he did as advised.

As the friend was not a wealthy man and had no servants, he and Master Shen literally moved the bed themselves from one wall to another. Later, Master Shen left.

A few months later Master Shen received a letter from his friend, who replied in amazement, “Dear Master Shen, how can you be so accurate? Within three months, just as you predicted, I received my post at that particular county, how did you know when and which county? You are some sort of magician, you should be in the service of others with your wonderful magic.”

Master Shen replied, “Dear friend, I could see you have good study and academic success energy in your house, so I knew you would be successful in your examination after we moved the bed; as then you could take advantage of this kind of energy.” (The word he used was ‘Qi’ pron. chee).

“Also,” continued Master Shen, “I could see in your house you do not have the good wealth energy, so I knew you would not be assigned a post to a wealthy county, but rather to a poor county, and the obvious one was that particular county.”

*****

So, can Feng Shui be used for predictions? In a way it can; because Feng Shui shows the potential of a house to bring certain outcomes to its occupants. Once this is known, then the occupants have the choice as to how they use these energies. For instance, Master Shen’s friend was a scholar and chose to use the study energy for his benefit. If the person in question was not a scholar, academic, artist, then he may not have taken advantage of that type of good energy and it may have been ‘wasted.’

So Feng Shui reveals how a house can bring certain influences to the occupants.

Every year the Feng Shui of your building has annual influences, what we call the ‘Annual Stars.’ These stars will interact with the existing Feng Shui stars for your house (which generally do not change).

In 2006 the Annual Stars are:

Keep in mind that the Chinese new year commences on February 4th 2006, this is based on the Chinese Solar calendar, not the Lunar calendar – which is used to celebrate Chinese New Year (the Lunar new year in 2006 commences 29th January 2006).

Firstly some background work: take a compass reading and divide your house into eight sections to show how the qi is distributed throughout:

Stand at the front of your house and take a compass reading, find the direction your house is facing
On a floorplan of your house, find the centre and then draw a line from the centre to the front of the house, parallel with the walls of your house (see the diagram, the dashed green line indicates the direction the house is facing)
Take a protractor (a circular one is best) and find the degrees (in this case 76 degrees). Place the protractor on the centre of your floorplan and line it up so the degrees match with the green line. Mark off the 8 sectors:

Draw a line between the sectors, running through the centre of your house (as in the diagram).

If your front door or bedroom are located in one of these eight directions lets see what it may foretell:

1 White is in the east this year, this is a good time for travel to make money, or being invited to travel for business or intellectual pursuits. 1 White also represents wisdom and love so is well placed for the people sleeping in the front bedroom in our case study.

2 Black is in the southeast. This is the sickness star so if it’s at the front door it can mean sickness of income and wealth, or may mean that there is ‘sickness’ in the wealth aspect of a business which will show up easier this year (which can be a good thing). If your bedroom is in the southeast part of your house, then this type of qi can bring illness.

Our case study has a window in the southeast which is part of the office area so may incur such sickness problems associated with wealth this year.

Think back to 2005, if your bedroom was in the east, then last year was a sickness year for you. The sickness can show up a number of ways from a common cold to a more serious type of illness, depending on the Feng Shui of your own house (which changes from place to place). I have seen many cases of minor niggling sicknesses through to more serious ones where the annual star 2 is located.

If the bedroom is located in the southeast this year, then you need to do a few things:

Dont use this room
Avoid the colour red in the room as it will fuel the sickness qi
Place a Wu Luo next to your bed. A Wu Luo, or Calabash is a type of gourd in the shape of a Figure 8. This is placed next to the bed and a hole pierced in the top to absorb the bad qi.
Some people are sceptical of this cure say it’s a psychological fix-it. From my experience and according to the advice of my Feng Shui mentor, Master Joseph Yu, it is not psychological. Master Yu has seen many times in China, mothers placing a Wu Luo next to the bed of a sick child and afterwards the child’s health improves. The child doesn’t know what it’s for, so how can it cure them through psychology?

Heres an image of a Wu Luo, this one is painted with Quan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, it can also be painted gold or a metallic colour. A hole should be pierced in the top to allow the sickness energy to be absorbed and retained inside.

Hang some chimes outside so the wind can create the sound of metal to repel the bad qi. A lot of Feng Shui books specify that the chimes have to have the right number of rods; this is unnecessary, as long as the sound is of good quality metallic tone.
Hang a bell on the door, or use another door this year (if your wealth is already good in your house, then continue to use the same door, the good will take care of the bad; but if you notice a downturn, try another door).
If you are a doctor, then having your front door facing the southeast in 2005 is very good for you, as more sick patients will come in this year! In 2005 one of my Feng Shui students, who is also a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, said that he and all his colleagues with east facing entrances did exceptionally well last year as the sickness star was at their door.

3 Green is in the centre this year so has less influence on your Feng Shui.

4 Dark Green is in the northwest and is the star of romance, art and academic success. If you study in this area of your home it is good to place 4 sticks of water bamboo in a clear glass vase in this area to assist the flow of good academic and artistic skills. If you don’t study or are not artistic, then it may bring romance, but beware, it’s only suitable for singles, the type of romance is not suitable for couples and can bring love affairs but not serious love.

In our case study, the northwest is the location of the lounge, so sitting here will help with these life aspects this year, and careful not to place any moving water (such as water feature or fishtank) here unless you want romance.

5 Yellow in the west is the other star to be aware of; we call him the Emperor as he is quite powerful and doesnt like to be told what to do. He especially doesnt like to be disturbed so no digging, creating holes in the ground or the walls of your home or garden as this type of disturbance can affect any and all aspects of your life detrimentally.

If your front door is in the west then this year be extra careful and hang a bell on the door and if you have one, a chiming clock in the entrance hall to pacify the Emperors qi.

If your bedroom is in the west then a golden yellow colour will calm the Emperor and definitely again avoid the colour red which will inflame his unpredictable nature.

In our case study the back door is in the west so the occupants should avoid using this door, or at least hang a bell here so the sound of metal can pacify the emperor somewhat.

6 White in the northeast is a good star for authority, power and career success. It can bring riches and fame (good reputation) in business and is especially good in its location this year. It has a good personality in general.

In our case study this is the location of the front door, so the 6 White can come in and enhance the careers of the occupants.

7 Red in the south is related to the mouth, speech and communication so this year can bring problems associated with the mouth, with excessive talking or foot-in-mouth disease, drinking eating or drug taking, mouth related illness, especially if in the bedroom or at the front door. There is also a fire hazard so purchase a fire extinguisher and be careful not to leave the stove on; check for faulty appliances.

8 White is the most benevolent and happy star and in 2006 is in the north. If your front door is here, expect a good year of stable, steady income and financial success. Even if the 8 White comes into your bedroom, it will tell the other stars there to ‘behave’ so if you were having a hard time in 2005 expect improvements this year!

9 Purple is in the southwest and is a pushy, nosey star so watch the neighbours on this side of the house! (Only kiddingsort of). 9 Purple is so pushy it will push other stars to do work so it all depends on the nature of the stars in your house as to how they will be affected and thereby affect you and your life.

Under certain conditions the 9 Purple can also bring illness as it is fire in nature and can enhance the sickness star 2 for your home. Therefore if the 9 Purple is in your bedroom then theres no harm with placing a Wu Luo here either.

In our case study the 9 Purple is in the dining room this year so having dinner parties here will promote lots of gossip and possible scandal depending on what you gossip about of course! If the dining table is used for study or work it can also push you to work harder and be more productive.

It takes about a month for the annual stars to have a real effect, so wait until March if unsure of a major change such as repainting a room or changing a door. What I mention here will not necessarily happen for everyone, but is a guideline to what can happen this year.

Also, the Annual Stars should to be read in more detail in conjunction with the Feng Shui Fei Xing (Flying Stars) chart for your house. Consulting a reputable practitioner is recommended.

*****

On another Feng Shui note, in February 4th 2004 we changed to a new 20 year cycle, known as Period 8. This has affected the lives and livelihoods of many people. You have probably sensed a lot of changes happening in the past two years and now that we’ve had time to assess the impact, I can say that:

The Feng Shui of north facing business established between 1984 and 2004 has changed dramatically. These buildings are the worst affected. We must assume we’re talking here about the average shop or business facing north with windows facing out to the street and other buildings or an access laneway at the back.

These businesses have been affected the worst because in Period 7 they had the best kind of wealth qi coming in through the front door. Once we changed to Period 8, the best wealth qi moved and is now right at the back of the building.

If there’s no windows or doors at the back (that is no way for the ‘Feng’ or ‘wind’ to enter), then this will affect the business greatly and Ive seen a lot more problems with these businesses than any others.

It could mean that whole shopping strips are affected.

The solutions:

Move premises
Place real large water at the rear, such as a water feature or fishtank
Open up a window or knock a hole in the wall and create a window or door for the wind to enter
Encourage customers to park and enter from the rear of the building, thereby bringing the good qi into the business
Renovate the entire shop by moving everything out, changing everything around and then moving everything back in again. This is a complex solution and needs to be discussed in detail with your practitioner.

Isn’t it interesting that many shopping strips have an active and a passive side?

In Feng Shui we refer to this phenomena in terms of Yin and Yang. The Yang sides where theres a concentration of activity. A Yang location is preferred, especially for businesses.

This could be the side with more sun (good for a cafe strip) or the side with more shops. It could be where the people find parking easier, or where theres more shade from the weather.

Now, with shopping centres it’s a bit different. Obviously where people enter and leave will be the most Yang area and a prime location. Highpoint Tullamarine has a curved shape, with a pathway leading in an arc around the interior. Basically its better to be located inside the curve of the arc, rather than outside the arc.

Melbourne Central’s is a good location as the tall building (wood – shaped like a tree-trunk) supports the cone-shaped dome (fire); so wood feeds the ‘firey’ shape, enhancing the centre. Daimaru, however did not do so well because their administration area was within the tall building which has its energy drained.

Here are a few hints on choosing a good shop location:

Don’t choose a shop directly opposite a T-intersection. Shops on either side are OK.

Rather, choose a shop on a meandering pathway/road.

A shop on a corner is good as it benefits from two streams of traffic (especially if the door is across the corner).

Look out for straight lines pointing towards the door or windows, they cause negative qi (energy).

If you’re on a straight shopping strip, place tables, planter boxes or other objects outside the front of your shop to draw attention and slow down the qi and bring it inside.

Avoid a location on a steep slope as wealth runs away like water.
