An Introduction to 8 Mansions Feng Shui

Sep 3rd, 2005 • Category: Feng Shui Life

Your 8 Mansions Kua formula (also known as Bazhai, Ming Gua, Wandering Star, Lucky Star or Guardian Star) is determined by your year of birth and whether you are male or female.

Some Feng Shui Masters use the Chinese Solar Calendar and advocate that if you were born after 5th Feb, you use that birth year and if born before 5th Feb you use the year preceding it. The beginning of the solar year can vary from 3rd 5th February, (which marks the day falling between the winter solstice and the spring equinox), so you will need to consult a solar calander for further accuracy if born between the above dates in Feb.

Other Feng Shui Masters use the Chinese Lunar Calendar for locating an individual’s Kua. The general reasoning behind using the Lunar Calendar to determine your Kua is that the moon is closely connected with nature’s cycles of birth, and the beginning of each Lunar year marks the birth of the Chinese New Year and each individual’s Earthly Branch (ie Chinese Animal Sign). Note: Our free Kua Analysis service also utilises the Lunar Calendar method for determining one’s Kua.

Its up to you to decide which calendar (ie Solar or Lunar) you feel gives you the most consistent results when determining the Kua for an individual born between 1st January until 5th February in any given year. In many cases, it will be the same Kua for both calendars, however there will always be some people born in January to mid February who have a different Kua depending on which calendar system they use. Here are the formulae for determining the Kua of an individual, incorporating the Solar calendar rule (so if you were born on or after 5th February, you use your year of birth, and if born before 4th Feb, use the prior year as your year of birth).

MALE KUA FORMULA
Add the digits of your year of birth
(ie 1987 = 1+9+8+7 = 25)
Reduce the number to a single digit
(ie 2+5 = 7)
Subtract this number from 11 and reduce to a single digit
(ie 11-7 = Kua 4)

FEMALE KUA FORMULA
Add the digits of your year of birth
(ie 1987 = 1+9+8+7 = 25)
Reduce the number to a single digit
(ie 2+5 = 7)
Add this number to 4 and reduce to a single digit
(ie 7+4 = 11, 1+1 = Kua 2)

The following chart can also be used to locate your Lunar year of birth and its corresponding Kua number and Lo Shu element. Note: the Kua for each Lunar birth year is different for males and females.

As you can see from the table above, there are 9 different Kua Numbers ranging from 1-9. The number 5 is unique in that it corresponds to the Centre (Dao) of the Lo Shu chart, rather than a directional Trigram and as a result, ALL Kua 5 earth MALES automatically relate to Kua 2 earth directions and ALL Kua 5 earth FEMALES automatically relate to Kua 8 earth directions. Bearing this in mind, you should now look up your Kua in the following table to see what your 4 Positive Directions are.

KUA 1 WATER: Southeast (Success), East (Health), South (Harmonious Relationships), North (Personal Development).

KUA 2 EARTH: Northeast (Success), West (Health), Northwest (Harmonious Relationships), Southwest (Personal Development).

KUA 3 WOOD: South (Success), North (Health), Southeast (Harmonious Relationships), East (Personal Development).

KUA 4 WOOD: North (Success), South (Health), East (Harmonious Relationships), Southeast (Personal Development).

* KUA 5 EARTH: (Males refer to Kua 2 Earth directions and Females refer to Kua 8 Earth directions).

KUA 6 METAL: West (Success), Northeast (Health), Southwest (Harmonious Relationships), Northwest (Personal Development).

KUA 7 METAL: Northwest (Success), Southwest (Health), Northeast (Harmonious Relationships), West (Personal Development).

KUA 8 EARTH: Southwest (Success), Northwest (Health), West (Harmonious Relationships), Northeast (Personal Development).

KUA 9 FIRE: East (Success), Southeast (Health), North (Harmonious Relationships), South (Personal Development).

From the Table above, it can be seen that all Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 people benefit from the directions North, South, East and Southeast, thus making them East Group people.

All Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8 people (remembering that Kua 5 people defer to Kua 2 or 8 directions, depending on whether they are male or female) benefit from the directions West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast, thus making them West Group people.

Now, how to put your positive directions into practice. Its actually very simple. The two most beneficial ways to incorporate your positive directions are to sleep in bed so that your head points to one of your positive directions and to sit at your work/study desk so that you are facing towards one of your positive directions.

When orientating the bedhead direction of a child under the age of 12 years, you may find their Success direction may keep them awake as it is very yang (active) in nature. If this is the case, try tapping them into one of the other 3 positive directions instead, while maintaining a solid wall behind the bedhead. Otherwise, make sure they have a regular winding down time before bed, incorporating a relaxing bath, relaxing aromatherapy oils, a bedtime story and subdued lighting.

If studying for important exams, your Personal Development and Success directions will contain the most benefit for you.

If recovering from illness or an accident, try to sit at the dining room table so that you are facing towards your Health direction and sleep in bed with your head pointing towards your Health direction. If this is not possible due to the bedroom layout, then defer to one of the other 3 positive directions for your bedhead. Remember, if your bedhead is not pointing towards one of your 4 positive directions, then you have orientated your bed in a negative position and it will be draining for you, UNLESS you have your bedhead against the timely chor sin 8, (according to xuan kong feng shui) in which case you will simply need to make sure your personal Kua element is in harmony or bridged according to the lucky mountain star energy of the chor sin 8.

Please Note: when applying more advanced feng shui formulae (eg Xuan Kong Fei Xing Feng Shui), your sleeping orientation can be fine tuned to take advantage of positive mountain star energy residing in the walls of your home, (particularly the ruling star 8 mountain energy) and this can over-ride your positive directions according to 8 Mansions Feng Shui. If you try using a positive sleeping orientation and find it is not helping, then you should further investigate the mountain star energy in the wall behind the bedhead using a Xuan Kong Feng Shui Practitioner.

Make sure you are certain you are tapping into a positive direction by checking with a compass. Its no good assuming the direction due to the position of the sun when it rises and sets, because it varies depending on the season, and you may think you are facing towards the North when in actual fact you are facing towards the Northeast and so on.

If your compass doesnt show the dividing lines between the 8 cardinal directions, and youre not sure which direction youre actually tapping into, use the table below which gives the precise compass bearings of each direction.

NORTH: 337.5 22.5 degrees
NORTHEAST: 22.5 67.5 degrees
EAST: 67.5 112.5 degrees
SOUTHEAST: 112.5 157.5 degrees
SOUTH: 157.5 202.5 degrees
SOUTHWEST: 202.5 247.5 degrees
WEST: 247.5 292.5 degrees
NORTHWEST: 292.5 337.5 degrees

If you and your partner are an East/West combination, your positive directions will not correspond, so you should orientate your bedhead towards an exterior chor sin 8 wall, or choose a favourable direction for the main bread winner in the family.

If your Bedroom contains favourable Xuan Kong numbers AND your bedhead points towards a favourable direction according to your Kua, then the probability factors are much better for your health and relationship chi.

You should also try to locate your Home Office/Study within a compass sector of the home containing a favourable Xuan Kong probability combination of numbers, with the Siang Sin 8 location being the most favourable for the next 20 year period beginning on 4th Feb 2004. If your Home Office/Study contains favourable Xuan Kong numbers AND you sit at your work desk facing towards a favourable direction according to your Kua, then the probability factors are much better for your overall abundance and achievement potential.

Another handy tip is to always take note of the annual Tai Sui location each year. This annual energy influence changes position on the 4th Feb each year and covers 15 degrees of the compass. You should never sit at your work desk facing directly towards the annual Tai Sui in any given year, because it will place additional obstacles in your path. Alternatively, you can benefit from supportive energy if you sit with the annual Tai Sui directly behind you. This year (until 3rd Feb 2006) the Tai Sui occupies the centre of the West sector.
